RESUMO

Corneal melting is a rare ocular complication of rheumatoid arthritis, associated with poor prognosis. Rapid course of the disease and unpredicted treatment response, which depends on a patient general state and disease severity, make every case a challenge and requires a cooperation between ophthalmologists and rheumatologists. We present a case of a 58-year-old woman with corneal melting, who was successfully treated with systemic corticosteroids and methotrexate, along with ocular surgery.

RESUMO

This paper presents the evaluation of cytoprotective ability of trehalose-based eye drops in comparison with commercially available preparations during the experimental desiccation of cultured human corneal epithelial cells. Cultured human corneal epithelial cells (hCEC) underwent incubation with 7 different, commercially available medicaments used commonly in dry eye syndrome treatment, followed by desiccation trial performed on air under the flow hood for 5, 15, 30, and 45 minutes. Cell viability was quantified by live/dead fluorescent assay, while the presence of apoptotic cells was estimated by immunofluorescent staining for active caspase 3 protein. The preservation of membrane functions was evaluated using neutral red staining, while the preservation of proper morphology and phenotype was determined by fluorescent staining for actin filaments, nuclei, and p63 protein. The trehalose-based eye drops showed the highest efficiency in prevention of cell death from desiccation; moreover, this preparation preserved the normal cellular morphology, functions of cell membrane, and proliferative activity more effectively than other tested medicaments.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To present the results of longitudinal chromatic aberration measurements on two groups of pseudophakic eyes in comparison to healthy eyes. METHODS: The longitudinal chromatic aberration of the eye, defined as chromatic difference of refraction with disabled accommodation, was measured with the use of a visual refractometer with a custom-designed target illuminator consisting of a narrow-band RGB diode (blue λb = 470 ± 15 nm; green λg = 525 ± 18 nm; red λr = 660 ± 10 nm). The measurements were performed on nine eyes implanted with AcrySof IQ SN60WF, 14 eyes implanted with AcrySof SA60AT, and 10 phakic eyes under cycloplegia. RESULTS: The mean values of the longitudinal chromatic aberration between 470 and 660 nm for the control group was 1.12 ± 0.14 D. For SA60AT group, it was 1.45 ± 0.42 D whereas for SN60WF it was 1.17 ± 0.52 D. The statistical test showed significant difference between SA60AT and the control group (p << 0.05) and no significant difference between SN60WF and the control groups (p = 0.64). CONCLUSIONS: The study showed that the longitudinal chromatic aberration in vivo can be easily and reliably estimated with an adapted visual refractometer. The two groups of pseudophakic eyes measured in this study showed different values of chromatic aberration. Its magnitude for SA60AT group was significantly larger than for the control group whereas for SN60WF the difference was not significant. The optical material used for intraocular lens design may have significant influence on the magnitude of the chromatic aberration of the pseudophakic eye, and therefore on its optical and visual performance in polychromatic light.

RESUMO

Lymphoedema-distichiasis syndrome (LDS, OMIM #153400) is a genetic disorder with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance caused by mutations in the FOXC2 gene. Affected individuals typically present with lower extremity lymphoedema and distichiasis. The most common types of mutations in FOXC2 gene include small deletions and insertions, but duplications, duplications-insertions, missense and nonsense mutations were also found. Herein, we describe three generations of a family diagnosed with LDS caused by a new mutation in the FOXC2 gene. This mutation is a frameshift due to a deletion of the nucleotides (CC) in C repeats between C590 [corrected] and C595 [corrected]. This mutation leads to protein truncation as a result of an earlier insertion of a stop codon. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of this mutation in the literature and could be coupled with an atypical lymphoscintigram.

RESUMO

The invasion of malignant cells through the basement membrane is a critical step in local infiltration and metastasis. Adhesion and invasion of malignant cells may be modulated by their receptor mediated binding to the basement membrane glycoprotein-laminin. Laminin consists of the sequences with anticancer and antimetastatic activity. Its peptide fragment YIGSR is known to inhibit the experimental metastases of several tumors. This sequence and a tripeptide RGD of laminin inhibits both angiogenesis and tumor growth. In contrary, the sequence SIKVAV initiates angiogenesis and tumor progression. Moreover, laminin plays also other functions in human organism. One of them is the influence on platelet aggregation and thrombogenesis.
